Manager, News Research

Wavo, a content news provider in the dot.com industry, delivered news from leading media providers into affordable packages, with custom filters and integration. The focus of Manager of News Research was to create a product catalog that pulled together the technical information of four separate companies that were acquired by Wavo. In addition as Specification Coordinator I oversaw that our product was in compliance with ISO, MARC21, IPTC and XML standards. In order to achieve these two goals I had to create an open channel of communication with our vendor providers, customers, and the development team

  • Maintain vendor relations with over 80 worldwide content providers, newswire publishers and distributors.
  • Develop the Wavo Digital Library as an Intranet/Extranet knowledge management tool for the company. Software used was Access 2000, HTML, ASP and Visual Basic.
  • Create and maintain taxonomy and content mapping consistent with industry standards.
  • Interface with Java, XML, HTML, Unix and other developers at three nationwide locations.
  • Organizing existing and new vendors with our technical staff in order to create a smooth workflow for new product development.
  • Establish a Competitive Intelligence presence in the company.

    In addition to traditional reference librarian duties performed the Senior Technology Librarian takes responsibility for the following:

  • Computer Training Center
    As a result of winning multiple technology grants from the State Library, I successfully established the only computer-training lab within Bergen County libraries. I was responsible for the grant request, purchase, vendor interface, installation and maintenance. I also coordinated 20 volunteer trainers to teach in English and Spanish the basics of computers, software, and HTML.
  • Network Administrator
    • Familiar with the most common network and PC operating systems (NT, UNIX, Win, Mac) and the basics of the OSI and TCP/IP transmission and/or carrier models/protocols.
    • Maintain, repair and upgrade all PC's requiring an advanced knowledge of MS-DOS, multiple Windows versions and NT.
    • Educate and train staff and patrons in the use of all standalone and networked technologies.
    • Develop policies and procedures for the use of all computerized technologies and technology logistics.

  • Webmaster
    Create and maintain the web presence and monthly online newsletter, Access Englewood.   • I managed a team of eight professionals, acting as their liaison to the project at large. Highlights at infoSage involved working with outside vendors, demonstrating our product to IBM Japan, and coordinating the team of information specialists with the rest of the development teams on infoSage. This project closed down in 1996.

Reference Librarian -- Technology Coordinator -- Webmaster

  • I worked towards establishing precedence for "technology librarianship," a relatively new role for librarians, stemming from traditional duties, adding to it systems administration responsibility. In order to support growing technology needs, the library was awarded several technologies grants, which I administered. Teaneck Public Library was the first library to host a website in the Northern New Jersey region, which I created and maintained. In addition, I chaired the first Internet Interest Group for Librarians in Northern New Jersey.

  • Sunday manager in charge of the facility and staff. Duties included providing reference assistance to students and faculty, bibliographic instruction, and assisting patrons with various automated indices.

Reference Librarian

  • As reference librarian I assisted patrons in researching for information through a multitude of mediums. This includes using traditional reference tools, as well as CD-ROM and on-line searching. I also provided bibliographic, database and Internet instruction. As the technology coordinator for library, duties included the purchase and maintenance of computers, software, and peripherals. Effective trouble shooting of computers and technical equipment is my strongest skill. Other duties performed were grant proposals, press releases and interviews.


LECTURES

Cynthia Hetherington is in demand as a presenter at professional conferences throughout the country. Since 1998 she has spoken at more than twenty national and International conferences training business professionals about the uses of the Internet and online databases for investigative purposes. Highlights from recent years are the International High Technology Crime Investigation Association, Iowa State Police and Lucent Technologies.
